An artisan carefully pours liquid colors into a decorative brass mold called a trepa, which outlines the intricate geometric or floral patterns. They then layer dry cement over the design and subject the entire tile to immense pressure under a hydraulic press. The result is a thick, heavy tiles that is beautifully robust and built to last for generations. 

The history of these tiles in Mérida intertwines with the late 19th and early 20th-century henequen boom. Wealthy local families traveled extensively to Europe and returned completely enamored with French Art Nouveau and Spanish Modernist aesthetics.

To replicate that European luxury within the tropical climate of the Yucatán Peninsula, pasta tiles became the ultimate design solution. They felt cool to the touch, easily resisted the intense southern humidity, and transformed living rooms with vibrant patterns that mimicked luxurious woven rugs.

Today’s, as Mérida real estate restoration breathes new life into downtown properties, these artisan cement tiles remain the star of the show. Stepping onto these tiles connects you directly to the local artisans who keep this traditional technique alive in workshops across the peninsula. They represent a flawless blend of function, heritage, and artistic expression.
