The city of Mérida was founded by the Spanish conquistadors in the 1540s, on top of a centuries-old Maya city called T'ho.

Mérida was named after Mérida, Spain. It is rumored that the Maya ruins discovered in T'ho reminded the Spanish conquistadors of the Roman ruins of Augusta Emerita.

Over time, the city acquired the nickname "La Ciudad Blanca" (The White City). This may be due to the white limestone used to paint the façades of the colonial buildings.

In some folklore, however, it is thought to originate from the founding Spanish settlers allowing only white-skinned Europeans to live within the city.

Mérida is home to the third-largest old town district (Centro Mérida) on the continent.
