Chelem, meaning "Here under the magpie," is one of the most important ports in the municipality, attracting visitors year-round.
Many years ago, Chelem Puerto served as a landing site for cattle, fruits, and other goods transported by canoes from Chiapas and Tabasco. Today, the village is known for its broom-making, fishing, hunting, salt flats, and tourism. Many families from Mérida and beyond have vacation homes in this tropical retreat, surrounded by numerous tourist centers.
