Art, Culture and Community Spirit

Located just four blocks south of Plaza Grande, the Church of San Juan is one of the most breathtaking in Mérida. Dating back to 1770, this magnificent yellow church stands out with its architectural details and commanding presence in the park.

The San Juan Arch marks the most significant historic gate to the city. It was rebuilt in 1790 during the governorship of Lucas de Gálvez y Montes de Oca, the same Lucas de Gálvez who initiated the construction of Mérida’s largest market, Mercado Lucas de Gálvez.

The inscription on the arch’s plaque reads:

"The Year 1790. Owing to the personal intervention, zeal, and prudent policy of the Governor Captain General of this Province, the lord don Lucas de Gálvez was able to inspire the generous stimulus of the Pueblo, lovers of the common benefits of liberty, in whose name were provided the funds for the opening and construction."

In the San Juan Park, a garden and fountain are adorned by a bronze statue known as “The Little Black Girl of San Juan.” During colonial times, lantern bearers were entrusted with keeping the peace, announcing, "It’s twelve o’clock, and all is serene."

In 1810, the chaplain of the church, Don Vicente María Velásquez y Alvarado, led the San Juanistas, a movement attributed to some of the earliest calls for Mexican independence.

Annual Event: Paseo de las Ánimas

Last week of October

The Paseo de las Ánimas is an important part of Día de Muertos celebrations. Participants gather at the General Cemetery (Calle 81A x 90, Centro) and walk in a procession to San Juan Park, dressed in traditional Yucatecan clothing with painted skulls on their faces. Upon arrival, visitors can enjoy traditional snacks, sweets, cultural performances, and presentations.
