It’s no surprise that Santa Lucia, the closest Colonia to Plaza Grande, plays an important role in the history of Mérida's neighborhoods. Both locals and visitors gather here to watch beautiful dancers, learn about Yucatecan history, and enjoy the pleasant weather.
Santa Lucia holds great cultural significance in the city. The salmon-colored Santa Lucia Church stands at the corner of Calle 60 and Calle 55, just three blocks north of Plaza Grande. Across from the church, a small park serves as a venue for music and dancing events, held under the sculpted heads of famous Yucatecan musicians. Artisans’ booths are also set up on Sundays and other special occasions.
In recent years, Santa Lucia Park has grown in popularity. It is anchored by La Tratto Santa Lucia, a restaurant owned by the same family behind Trotter’s and Pancho’s. The park also features the well-known Ki'Xocolatl chocolate shop and many other attractions.
One of the park's most cherished traditions is the Yucatecan Serenade, held every Thursday at 9:00 PM since 1965. This open-air event showcases live music, local history, and traditional costumes, along with performances of Yucatecan dances.
