Art, Culture and Community Spirit

This area was once a separate Mayan village on the northeastern outskirts of the original city limits of Mérida. The first colonial building constructed here was, naturally, the church, originally built as a chapel for the Indigenous population. Part of the original chapel is believed to form the sanctuary of the current church in Itzimná, which was built in the 18th century.

Itzimná became an area where wealthy hacienda owners built their summer homes. It’s hard to believe that this neighborhood was once considered far from the city! Today, Itzimná is known for its magnificent, sprawling homes, many of which have since been repurposed for different uses.

The church of Itzimná remains a local favorite, often chosen as the site of weddings due to its charm and beauty. It is surrounded by a large square with shaded trees, creating a peaceful setting. The area is also home to numerous public and private schools, as well as dance and art schools and a variety of restaurants.
