Art, Culture and Community Spirit

The very first hospital in Mérida was built in Mejorada in 1562. Between 1688 and 1694, the Franciscans constructed two sets of churches and convents—one disappeared, but the other, La Mejorada, still stands today.

This historic building has served many purposes over the years before becoming home to the Faculty of Architecture at UADY. It is also connected to another important Franciscan colonial structure, the Dragon Cavalry, which once served as the military garrison headquarters of Mérida.

Exploring Mejorada Park

This tranquil park features a large bronze sculpture commemorating the Niños Héroes de Chapultepec, often used by local youth for dance and parade practice. While there is no market in the neighborhood, the central Mercado Lucas de Gálvez is just a few blocks south.

On the west side of the park, you’ll find:

  • The famous Los Almendros restaurant, known for its traditional Yucatecan cuisine.
  • The Museo del Arte Popular, a museum dedicated to Mexican folk arts and crafts.

Mejorada is mostly centered around local celebrations and events. To stay informed, visit the church and check the bulletin board for upcoming activities.
