The area known as Alemán was one of Mérida’s first planned developments. Built in 1957, it was named after Mexico’s former president at the time, Miguel Alemán. Originally designed as a federally funded housing project for workers, it stood out as the only colonia with a sewer system—a distinction it still holds today! It was also the first colonia in the city to receive city water.
Alemán is thoughtfully designed, with wide, tree-lined streets and avenues. In its early days, it consisted of small houses, but over time, residents purchased adjacent plots to build larger, more modern homes. Today, it is considered an upper-middle-class area with fairly modern residences.
Though primarily residential, Alemán features a few retail shops and restaurants. Its location is ideal, situated halfway between the Historic Center and Mérida’s major commercial hubs, including:
- Plaza Fiesta – Mérida’s oldest mall
- Alta Brisa Mall – A modern shopping destination
- Star Médica Hospital – One of the city’s top medical facilities
Alemán remains a well-planned, desirable neighborhood, offering a balance of history, convenience, and modern living.
